What makes local SEO for dentists different?
Every trade competes in the same Map Pack, but the pressure points are not the same. Here is what decides results for dentists.
Patients search in an emergency, not in a research mood
A large share of new patient searches are urgent, such as emergency dentist or tooth pain near me. Urgent searchers pick from the Map Pack immediately, so a rank of eight is effectively invisible no matter how good the website is.
Your catchment is a radius, not an address
Patients will drive ten or fifteen minutes but rarely further. That makes the ring around your practice the only area worth measuring, and it is exactly the area a single rank check cannot see.
Review volume moves the needle harder than in most trades
Dental searches surface star ratings prominently and patients compare them side by side. A practice with 40 recent reviews routinely outranks a better-optimised practice with 8.
Category choice decides which searches you appear for at all
Dentist, Cosmetic dentist, Pediatric dentist and Dental clinic pull different result sets. Picking the wrong primary category quietly removes you from the searches you most want.
Insurance network searches are a modifier pattern of their own
A large share of dental searches add an insurer, as in dentist that takes Delta Dental near me or dentist that accepts my insurance. None of that shows up in a Google Business Profile field directly, so it has to be answered in Posts, Q&A and photos instead, and practices that never address it lose patients who filtered by network before they ever compared rank.
Multi-location practices repeat the same mistake at every site
Dental service organisations and multi-chair groups almost always try to run one central profile for several locations, which either buries every site but one or gets flagged as a duplicate. Each physical location needs its own profile, its own reviews and its own grid, tracked separately, because the catchments overlap enough to compete with each other if left unmanaged.
What do dentists actually get searched for?
These are the shapes of search that produce enquiries. Track the exact wording customers use, not a tidied-up version of it.
- dentist near me
- emergency dentist
- teeth whitening in [city]
How competitive is the Map Pack for dentists?
Dental Map Packs are usually contested by three to five established practices plus any group or corporate practice in the area, which typically has more reviews and a better-maintained profile. The realistic opening is geographic: the group practice rarely ranks well across the entire catchment, so there are almost always neighbourhoods where its grip is weak.
What should dentists fix first?
Run the grid first and find the streets where you fall below rank three. In dental practices that weak zone is nearly always on the far side of a competitor, which tells you the fix is prominence, meaning reviews and profile completeness, rather than anything on your website.
How to check where you rank right now
Checking one position from your own phone tells you almost nothing, because you are standing at the strongest point on the map. Run the keyword from a grid of points across the area you serve instead, and the picture changes immediately.
- 1Add your business, it is pulled straight from Google.
- 2Add the keyword customers really type, for example dentist near me.
- 3Set the grid to cover the area you genuinely serve.
- 4Read the colours: green is top three, amber four to seven, red eight or worse.
